Behind the Scenes: Keeping Our Sports Stadium Safe

Every event at the DCBL Stadium, a local authority–certified sports stadium relies on a dedicated team working behind the scenes to keep spectators, players, and staff safe.

One of the key roles in this team, is the Ground Safety Officer (GSO), who helps ensure the stadium operates in line with its Safety Certificate and approved safety procedures.

I am pleased to say that after working here for over 28 years as a part of the safety team, I am proud to have this varied and responsible role, with no two events are ever being the same.

Before gates open, the Ground Safety Officer and his team carry out detailed safety inspections of seating areas, concourses, exits, and emergency routes. During the event, they monitor crowd movement, spectator numbers, and changing conditions, working closely with stewards, control room staff, medical teams, and emergency services to maintain a safe and well-managed environment.

However, Ground Safety Officers cannot do this alone. A safe and successful event depends on a strong team of trained Safety Stewards on the ground. Safety Stewards are the eyes and ears of the stadium, welcoming spectators, managing crowd movement, keeping exits clear, and responding calmly and professionally if issues arise.

They play a vital role in delivering the safety plans that allow everyone to enjoy matchday with confidence.

We are currently recruiting Safety Stewards to join our matchday and event team. This is a great opportunity to be part of a professional safety operation, to gain valuable experience in event and crowd management, and contribute directly to public safety in your local community. Full training and support are provided, and roles are available to suit a range of availability.
