Staff Network Groups
At Halton, Staff Network Groups (SNGs) play a vital role in making the Council an inclusive, supportive and forward-thinking place to work. They are more than discussion forums — they are safe spaces, listening channels and drivers of positive change across our organisation. They also offer an insight into what life may be like for the diverse communities within our Borough.
A Safe Space to Be Heard
At the heart of each of our SNGs is a confidential and supportive environment where our colleagues can share experiences, feel respected and build meaningful connections. Our groups help ensure that everyone feels seen, heard and valued at work.
Shaping Halton’s Equality Agenda
Halton’s SNGs provide a two-way link with the Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategic Group, creating opportunities to exchange ideas, solve problems and share information. This collaboration helps ensure Halton’s equality objectives — as set out in the Corporate Plan — are informed by real staff experiences.
Supporting Opportunity and Representation
SNGs actively engage with underrepresented groups, helping to encourage and support employment opportunities within Halton. By doing so, they contribute to a more representative workforce and a stronger, more inclusive organisation.
Empowering Colleagues Through Awareness
Our SNGs support employee development by sharing information about their work across the organisation, raising awareness and helping HBC colleagues better understand equality issues and lived experiences. This empowers management in providing support for our staff as well as strengthening our collective workplace culture.
Our Groups
At HBC, we currently have 4 established SNGs – Disability and Neurodiversity, LGBTQIA+, Race Equality, and Religion and Faith – as well as a newly-formed Young Employees Network starting at the end of February (watch this space!). All of our groups have been doing great things to further inclusion within our workforce, working on their own initiatives and projects to empower each other, our management team, and our workforce to be the best they can be. As Emran Ali, the Chair of our Race Equality SNG says, ‘Our voices need to be heard. The global conversation is changing and if we’re not at the table to have those conversations, then we’re doing a disservice to ourselves.
